2019 Hubei International Triennial of Lacquer Art - World of Lacquer: Vessel & Form 2019.8.16 - 9.15

My work Hello Sadness has been selecte to

the 2019 Hubei International Triennial of Lacquer Art.

Academic Theme of Exhibition
World of Lacquer: Vessel & Form

The ancient lacquerwares, down through the ages and incredibly fascinating and impressive, trigger

people's muse over things in the remote past. It is so overwhelmingly charming not only because of its
decorative layer of unique visual aesthetics, but also because of the exquisite workmanship of its body.
Just as Huang Cheng puts in his book Record of Lacquer Decoration, "Wares made by artisans are like
the creatures out of the heaven and earth..." In this machine-based and digital era, the contemporary
lacquer art characterized as handicrafts is especially as precious as the "creatures out of the heaven and
earth". The Book of Changes (Zhou Yi) states that "A craftsman is inspired by his observations of forms."
In this "World of Lacquer", lacquer artists all put their heart and soul into making handicrafts inspired by
their observations of forms. Compared with classical lacquer artists, contemporary ones express their
minds and ideas straightforward by means of three-dimensional art works. The "Vessel" decorated with
lacquer is the carrier of the traditional ideas and contemporary spirit of lacquer art, and the
"Form" refers to both tangible "Things" and intangible "Tao" (Spirit). Themed on "Vessel &
Form", this exhibition is intended to create psychological and spiritual space and time, and
express the pursuit of and yearning for poetic life through the "Vessel & Form" of "creatures out
of the heaven and earth" that Chinese lacquer embodies. More importantly, it is aimed at
reflecting on history and life: In modern life, what kind of "Tao" do lacquer and the lacquer craft
lead us to follow? What profound thoughts do they inspire us to develop?
